Cholesterol pleural effusion.

چکیده
Cholesterol pleural effusion is a rather rare condition. It has been called by several names-cholesterol pleurisy, cholesterolthorax, cholesterous effusion, and cholesterol pleural effusion; the latter name appears to be the best. It is a pleural effusion with cholesterol crystals in the fluid. Only 44 cases were reported in the literature up to 1929. Since then there have been 15 cases reported. The first detailed description of a case was given by T. Churton1 in 1882. The most recent description was by Curran2 in 1948. The etiology remains rather obscure, but there are many theories concerning its occurrence. The fact remains that although the process of chronic pleural effusions is common, deposits of cholesterol crystals in pleural effusions are rarely encountered. The following is the case reported:

Background and purpose: Pleural effusion is a common finding in many pulmonary or extrapulmonary diseases and its analysis is essential for differentiating transudates from exudates. Light's criteria is questioned by some researchers and measuring of cholesterol in pleural effusion is proposed due to its simplicity and low cost. This study evaluates the diagnostic value of pleural fluid chole...
متن کاملUSE OF CHOLESTEROL IN THE DIFFERENTIATION OF EXUDATIVE AND TRANSUDATIVE PLEURAL EFFUSION
Light's criteria (protein and LDH) have been used to the present to differentiate exudative pleural effusion from transudative. This is both time consuming and relatively more expensive as compared to measuring cholesterol. During 1992-1993, a prospective study on 70 patients with effusion was carried out measuring fasting LDH, protein, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase and glucose. All pa...
متن کاملPleural Cholesterol to the Diagnosis of Exudative Effusion
INTRODUCTION Diagnostic approaches to patients with a pleural effusion must be precise because many procedures depend on the nature of the fluid in the effusion. To date, no biochemical test is considered an appropriate alternative to Light's criteria. This study compared the absolute pleural cholesterol (PC) level and the pleural cholesterol/serum cholesterol (PC/SC) ratio with Light's criteri...
متن کاملDifferentiating Pleural Effusions: Criteria Based on Pleural Fluid Cholesterol
Methods: Patients with pleural effusion during a 6-month period were enrolled in the study and underwent thoracentesis. Pleural fluid was analyzed for the levels of protein, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and cholesterol. Etiological diagnosis, which was established after considering clinical and biochemical factors, was the gold standard for comparison. Cut-off values for pleural fluid cholester...

Background: Pleural effusion is a common condition in pulmonary medicine. Determining the cause of the pleural effusion is a difficult task. The distinction between an exudate and a transudate is the first and the most important step in the differential diagnosis of a pleural effusion. Light’s criterion have been previously used for classifying pleural effusion. There are multiple other biochem...
